As part of the Purposeful Dreamer Experience, each Dreamer will be sharing their creative experience in two phases.
First, the beginning of their creative journey. Their background, feelings and experiences inspiring their creative journey to bring you to the second phase which will be their final art piece and the closure of their purposeful Dreamer Experience. Each dreamer was given a set of questions in an effort to understand their creative process coming from many different backgrounds, ages and ethnicities. Our goal is to inspire YOU to explore your creativity and the benefits it can provide no matter where you are in life.
Today’s journey is from my one and only, my husband Cal Hines. You will learn here that you don’t always have to have an artistic background to be challenged to create something and enter your creative side. He is, however, a dreamer, (and a talented electrician) with the biggest heart and the most caring and thoughtful person I know. He has thought me to be a better person in so many ways, when you meet Cal, you know you have met someone you can trust.
Let’s begin with Cal’s background:
Cal started in the electrical field almost 20 years ago. A little over 5 years ago, he took it upon himself to become a licensed master electrician and founded our company, All About ElectriCal LLC. In the 5 years we have been in business, I have never seen a man work so hard to finish a job and treat every electrical project like he would in his own home. His work ethic and care for people have allowed us to support our family and continue to build our business. I am thankful for Cal for challenging himself to start this business because I know this has not been an easy road, but it has showed me what is possible and inspires me to continue to work on creating Purposeful Dreamer.
What inspired you to create your piece of art for Purposeful Dreamer?
My first thought was I wanted to make something someone would really enjoy in their home. In our line of work, there is always a lot of scrap material left over, I came up with an idea to make something from copper scrap, this is also a great way to re-purpose and recycle.
I also thought about drawing some creativity from surfing which has brought so much joy to my life.
Was there something creative you really enjoyed as a kid or as a teenager and you no longer do? If creativity is still part of your life, why do you do it and what do you gain from it?
Not really, I wasn’t very creative as a child unless you consider sports, I spent most of my time playing almost every sport which came more naturally to me. I remember after moving to a new area and starting at a new school, I built a model car which I really enjoyed making. I also have always loved a lot of different types of music and movies which has the ability to create a range of emotions.
My creative process in life today usually involves my work, how to run a wire or on a bigger scale how to complete a whole job. I usually have to see different possibilities in my head and go with whatever feels like the right direction. I always gain a sense of accomplishment whenever I complete a project. I also have a lot of family members that are very artistic, so I get to live vicariously through them.
What feelings of the creative process have you experienced this far?
There is no doubt that I’ve experienced a lot of relaxation and mental stimulation from this process. I’ve had a lot of doubts too but once my idea came to me, I’ve never looked back.
What do you hope to gain from your creative experience?
I’ve spent most of my life sticking to what is comfortable and haven’t pushed my boundaries outside what I seem to be more naturally good at. I hope to gain more confidence to try more things that I’m not very good at.
